This paper has been developed with the main the purpose of assessing the impact of the Program
“Sao Paulo for Life” upon violent crime officially reported within the communities aff ected by its
interventions. In this sense, official data on murder from before and after the intervention have
been compared (2007 and 2008) among the aff ected communities. Additionally, comparisons
have also been performed between the aff ected communities and an established control group,
composed by similar communities, both in terms of criminal activity, as in terms of vulnerability to
violent behavior. Results have shown that, even though the city as a whole has also been reported
reduction of violence during the period under appraisal, the performance of those served juris-
dictions has been much more expressive. Such findings suggest that the interdisciplinary model
of crime prevention merits additional attention from policymakers and the research literature.
